Vega's #OneChange and the Breakfast Skipper

I am by far terrible about remembering to eat breakfast. I do my best to try and pack everything I need so that I can eat at work but it just doesn't always happen. As a runner training for the Blue Ridge Mountain Half Marathon, nutrition is a key component of my training and skipping breakfast is bad news. Ask my Sole Sisters. They will tell you that no one likes me when I'm hungry. Unfortunatly, it does happen.

Naturally, when I was contacted by Vega to make #OneChange and try Vega Nutritional Shakes, I decided to go for it. I already love their Vega Sport protein bars in Chocolate SaviSeed. So I really looked forward to giving the nutritional shake a go.

Vega wasted no time in getting me my sample and instead of a single pack, I actually received a full box of individually packaged servings, which was nice. The packets are convenient to pack in the tote bag that I take to work. That is far better than the tub of oatmeal that I grab from time to time. Another plus is that the product is vanilla which is my go to flavor in any protein or nutritional shake. I find it easy to customize for a smoothie this way.
I am a creature of habit and when it comes to shakes I have a few favorite combos that I work with. This morning it was peanut butter banana for the win.  This consists of:
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
  • 1 serving of vanilla protein powder (in this case 1 VegaOne nutritional shake pack)
  • 1-1 1/2 cups of vanilla coconut milk
  • ice if desired
Finished product...a little on the green side because the protein is pea based protein, but I don't mind that. I add spinach to a lot of my smoothies which makes them super green.

So my honest opinion is that I was not a fan of the flavor of this one. It was not the true french vanilla flavor I come to expect from a "French Vanilla" shake. The stevia seemed a bit over powering in this too. Since I am not one to base my opinion on one flavor, I ran out and grabbed a chocolate one. I actually like the chocolate one. I have since started keeping that one in my desk drawer at work and actually enjoy making a quick shake using my blender bottle and coconut milk. It is quick and easy.

My product summary is as follows:
  1. Not a fan of the vanilla; it just doesn't have the flavor I have come to expect from products that are flavored as "French Vanilla"
  2. I really like the chocolate and am happy drinking it just blended with coconut milk
  3. It is really on the high end in terms of price at $39.99 for a box of 10 packs or a small tub and $69.99 for the large tub - OUCH!
  4. It is completely vegan and gluten free which is a plus since I'm watching my wheat intake while I am in training

Finally, this is #onechange that I will make until I've completed my tub of chocolate but I do not know if I will be investing in a second since it is a little pricey.

  1. I felt the same way about the French Vanilla and the stevia being overpowering plus the cost for me is just a bit too much.

  2. Thanks, Anita. I broke down and grabbed one of the chocolate for the local health food store since it was on sale but even at 10% off it still seemed a bit expensive.
