Last Minute Valentine's Day Gifts for Runners

It's February and love is in the air...or maybe it's just the funk from the pile of tech gear that I need to go wash when I'm done writing this. Either way, Valentines day is just around the corner and with work and marathon training, how do you find time to find that ideal gift for the runner in your life?

Notice how I said "your life." I am the runner in my life. My better half, Glenn, only runs if he's being chased.

Anyway...here's my five last minute gift suggestions for runners:

1. For the Valentine's Day traditionalist that wants to put a running spin on things, how about chocolate - fuel that is. Ok...maybe your runner doesn't like chocolate flavored gu or gels, but a heart shaped box filled with their favorite running fuel is creative and thoughtful.

2. Face it, training for a race is taxing on the body and much is needed by way of recovery. We all have our sticks, balls, and foam rollers to get us by but what we really need is the occasional massage. Unfortunately, may of us avoid the added expense. Treat the one you love to a sports massage. HINT: Touch base with their friends to see who they recommend. If you are local to me (Annapolis, Maryland area) then I suggest Judy at Eastport Bodyworks Massage. She is a rock star. .

3. What's one thing that we never have enough of? Shoes!! Sure, this is on the more expensive end of the Valentine's gift spectrum but shoes - actually new running anything - is the way to a runner's heart. Just don't go buying them unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you have the right brand, model, and version. Err on the side of safety and go for the gift card at their favorite running store. Hell, face it; a gift card is a win all around.

4. Feeling creative? Hit the craft store for a basket and bow and then head to your local running shop for an assortment of running essentials to fill it with. Grab gels, energy blocks, and hydration tabs. Throw in some body glide and sun screen. Add some socks, a hat or visor, a spi belt, and sun glasses.

Want to take it over the top? Throw in a visa gift card with enough on it to cover a race entry of their choice.

5. Finally, want to go the extra mile?  Pardon the pun. Not really. Give the gift of your time. Find out when their next long run or race is, find out the route, and cheer them on.

Sometimes, the simplest gift can make the greatest impact.

Mother Nature Thwarts My Plans - Again!

Tuesday, February 10, 2015
So it's Tuesday and I am typically scheduled for my early morning run or what my running buddy, Robinson of Once and Future Runner, refers to as our "pre-dawn silliness." Well, Mother Nature thwarted my plans, yet again, leaving me feeling like a slacker.

Ok...a slacker until I walked out of the house and discovered that my steps were converted into an ice rink which nearly caused me to recreate the scene from Home Alone with the fast track down them.

Crisis averted though and I arrived safely at the bottom of the steps uninjured.

Then there was my car which was encapsulated in ice, sealing all the doors shut with the exception of the hatch back. My neighbor can thank me later for the free entertainment he was provided when I crawled in through the hatch of the CRV and made my way to the front of the vehicle to turn it on and start the thawing process.

New plan...go to work early then hit the gym for treadmill drills and spin.

Dreaming Big: Blue Ridge Marathon

Sunday, February 1, 2015

As I said, not long ago, I'm returning to Roanoke, VA to run the Blue Ridge Marathon. It's funny, but I find it appropriate that this will be my second full marathon since it was my second half marathon. I guess I've never been one for easy.

Naturally, right after I heard I was one of the Official Bloggers and registered for the full marathon I was all kinds of...

Then Cindy registered too and we were both like...

and our friends are like...

Now Cindy and I are trying to get our butts in shape by doing ample amounts of cross training...

long runs...

and treadmill drills.

Then we jacked the incline up on the treadmill to 30% and I was all...

Then I watched the Blue Ridge Marathon course video and was like...

For a moment I just wanted to...

because I was worried...

Fortunately, I'm getting my running mojo back...

and am already starting to feel like...

and I know that if we stay on point with training...we will crush those mountains.

Let's do this!!
