Blue Ridge Marathon - the Panic

Saturday was the last official long run before the Blue Ridge Marathon. While being a relatively uneventful 18 miles, it was still challenging thanks to the onset of spring allergies.

Breathing is overrated.

So here I am 23 days away from  America’s Toughest Road Marathon™ and surprised because the panic has not yet set in. What is there really to panic about, anyway?

The over 7,430 feet of elevation change?

The three mountains that I'll have to ascend and then descend?

The fact that the climb begins about a half mile into the race?

How about the fact that this is only my second marathon and I know from personal experience how the half marathon kicked my assets humbled me last year.

Maybe the panic is actually there but quietly pushed somewhere below the surface at the moment.

What is definitely starting to take hold is the excitement. Excitement because, like I said, this is my second marathon. There is also something exciting about running a race with the goal being just to finish and not to finish with a time in mind.

That was my mistake for Marine Corps Marathon; finishing within a specific time frame. Yeah - that didn't happen.

Of course, finishing Blue Ridge in under 07:30 is a given. That's the course cut off.

In the mean time, I just need to trust in my training and hard-headedness to get me through the race. Oh, and my desire to see what awaits us at the top of each mountain. Last year there were moo-mosas on top of Mill Mountain and a champagne toast at the top of Peakwood.

I didn't partake in either because I fear that running and alcohol won't mix well for me.

...and did I mention steamed shrimp at the finish line? While this is not the typical thing that I've grown to expect at the finish line of a race, it was pretty damn tasty.

But I have digressed...

Trust in the training - check.
Be motivated by a desire to see what's on top of three mountains - check.
Freak out because I'm going to run my second - and probably my hardest - marathon...


Ok... I'm wrong...the panic HAS set in.

  1. I would be panicking! Good for you. It can be hard to trust the training when you know you're heading to a big challenge. Have a great race day and enjoy the tops of those three mountains.
